PS3 Slim Backwards Compatibility and Virtual Console Weirdness Hey, does anyone know what method of emulation was used in the 25XX models of slim PS3 for PS1 backwards compatibility (hardware vs. software) and whether or not launching a game as a PS1 Classics title or off of an original PS1 disc has any difference in emulation?
What it has confirmed however, is that it won't be reinstating PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility into the new slim PlayStation 3 - that's "off the table" according to SCEA's John Koller.
Yes, all models of the PS3 are backwards compatible with the PS1. Only some models are backwards compatible with the PS2. You can save your games to the PS3 HDD, or (if you need to import old saved games) you can buy an adapter. The adapter costs about $30 and is available on Amazon:
5. Find the search box that appears in a darkened "pull down" list and search on "Backward Compatible" to find lots of information on Backward Compatibility. From a quick look at the list, it appears that the 160 GB System is suppposed to be backward comapatible with PlayStation 1 Games but not with PlayStation 2.
The PlayStation 3 was originally launched in Japan on November 11, 2006 and in North America on November 17, 2006 with two SKUs: a 20 GB version and a 60 GB version. Both of these models included hardware backwards compatibility for PlayStation 2 games. In January 2007, Sony announced that Europe 's 60 GB version would exclude hardware
I was always fond of the launch edition PS3 because it's an incredibly unique machine. It has the full Emotion Engine chip on the same motherboard as the PS3 RSX GPU and the Cell CPU. The PS2 hardware was built right into this PS3 which means the PS3 is compatible with every single PlayStation game to ever release.
It's more reliable to go with the slim. If you really want to play ps2 games you're better off buying a separate ps2 than buying the backwards compatible ps3. Also the slim doesnt collect dust from across the street. Yes, PS2 games look much better with the PS3 smoothing. kLKmb.
