Followthe money trail! Big business knows its business! Look at Schwalbe Marathon Mondial HS 428 touring tires, their best. For folding bead tires, two 559/26″, one 584/27.5″ and four 622/700c tires are currently listed. But then for wire bead tires at half the price, only one 559/26″, zero 584/27.5″ and two 622/700c tires are listed.
Again the wheel size number stated (“29 inches”) referred to an approximation of the diameter of the outside of the tyre, this time fitted with 2.25in tyres (as that was the average tyre width at the time). So 24.5in rim + 4.5in of tyre = 29in. Then the 27.5in (AKA 650b) wheel size came along.
Foryears the choice was 26 or 29. If anything 27.5 was something manufacturers came up with to sell more bikes , because it’s so close to a 26 inch wheel. moving from 26 to 27.5 was a huge difference--moving from 27.5 to 29er was not as much as a "whoa this is different" moment--although they both have their distinct feel.
Most26″ fat bikes have 80mm wide rims and they’re great for most people. Riders looking for maximum flotation would need two sets of fat-bike wheels to cover the full gamut from groomed to soft conditions fat-bike fun. In the 27.5 fat-bike world maximum flotation isn’t achieved with a wider rim. 27.5 max-float is achieved with a larger tire.
The"27.5 is fun/flickable/poppy and 29er is fast/planted" thing that people spout is kinda bullshit. Yeah probably it applies to bikes that are otherwise very similar (Scout 275 vs Scout 290 for example) but there is no reason apply that to everything.
WhenI go 26 to 29--yes I can see a difference. 27.5-29--same geo (ish) feels exactly the same, luggish on my corners, tankish on my climbs, airbus on jumps. I don't get it. Just get a 29er or a 26
Nowif we look at 650b as the name suggests, it measures 650 millimetres from the outside to the outside, including a tire. But just as with 700c, the true measurement is actually 584 millimetres
